08/26/2005 Emigrant Wilderness Peaks
Region : California
Location : TUOLUMNE County, CA
Event title : Emigrant Wilderness Peaks
Level : Advanced
Number of spots : 6
Event Coordinator name : Lee Kenyon

Description :
The Emigrant Wilderness covers a beautiful expanse of the Sierra directly north of Yosemite National Park. Although the peaks and canyons in the Emigrant are not as rugged as those of Yosemite and the High Sierra, the Emigrant offers easy access from the Bay Area and the Central Valley, fewer crowds than Yosemite, and - a great boon for backpackers - no permit quotas. The northern Emigrant is dominated by volcanic rock; the southern Emigrant is filled with numerous small lakes set amid granite domes. Well have a chance to explore both types of terrain on this trip.

The tentative schedule:
Friday, Aug 26: Drive to the Kennedy Meadows trailhead (6320') along Highway 108. Backpack 9 miles to Lewis Lakes (9085) and set up camp. Then scramble up Granite Dome (10320') over class 2 granite slabs.
Sat, Aug 27: Relief Peak-Molo Mountain-Kennedy Peak traverse. From the Lunch Meadow area, head up the south slopes of the Relief-Molo ridge, then scramble westward up the southeast ridge of Relief Peak (10808). Traverse the ridge east to Molo Mountain (10875'), staying on the south side of the ridge, then finally up the south slopes of Kennedy Peak (10718). The traverse is probably class 2, with some class 3 possible on the summit blocks. The expansive views should more than compensate us for the endless volcanic scree on the ridge.
Sun, Aug 28: From camp at Lewis Lakes, scramble up Black Hawk Mountain (10348'), probably over class 2 granite slabs, then return to camp. Backpack out to the Kennedy Meadows trailhead and drive home.

Of course, this schedule is subject to change based on the energy of the group and the type of conditions we encounter. I have not climbed these peaks before. If we find ourselves with extra time, an assortment of extra peaks (e.g., Big Sam, East Flange Rock) and lakes (e.g., Sardella Lake, Iceland Lake, Emigrant Meadow Lake) beckon. On other hand, it should be easy to forgo part of the Relief-Molo-Kennedy traverse if necessary (hopefully not!) - and anyone can sit out Granite Dome and Black Hawk Mountain.
You should be comfortable with rough cross-country travel and scrambling but you don         need any rock climbing or mountaineering skills. With the exception of the trip up to Lewis Lakes from Summit Creek, we'll do all of the cross-country travel and scrambling with daypacks only. Everyone should be self-sufficient and bring his/her own backpacking gear and food.

Description :

Split Mtn - Middle Palisade - Mount Sill

This trip will start at Red Lake Trailhead, traverse Split Mtn to meet the John Muir Trail (north), cross over Middle Palisade, drop into Lake Elsinore basin, ascend Mount Sill then follow S Fork Big Pine Creek to Glacier Lodge.  (this itinerary is from memory, maps will be consulted before and during the trip so if a detail is out of place, don         worry)

This trip will cover a fair amount of distance and require a base level of acclimatization so hopefully you have climbed over 10,000' within 2-3 weeks.  All travel should be over no greater than class 3 terrain, however, be prepared for some exposure.  Lightweight backpacking experience is a big plus and this definitely shouldn         be your first trip above 14,000'.
